#66 - Lost your spark? Here's how to reignite!
18 Jun 25
Let's be honest, we all have those moments where we dread going into work. Getting out of bed seems like the most challenging task that can be presented to you.
You feel stale, disconnected, unsure of why you are continuing to do what you do day in, day out.
This is a perfectly common and natural response that everyone experiences at some stage of their careers.
Do I stay or go? Is it time for a change? Or do I just need to reconnect and reinvigorate my interest in the role I currently have. Changing roles is stressful, so this may be the way to navigate a way through and regain the spark that is missing.

#66 - Lost your spark? Here's how to reignite!
What?
Even the best leaders can lose their spark.
What once felt purposeful can start to feel like a grind. You wake up, go through the motions, lead the meetings and make the calls. But the why behind it all feels blurry.
You’re still doing the job, but something’s missing. And deep down, you know it.
You also worry that others have noticed that you have 'gone off the boil' and are perhaps disengaged. You keep repeatedly asking yourself the same question, over and over. 'When will I be found out? When will be the point at which my boss calls me in for a chat about my performance?'
This is more common than most leaders admit. But it’s also a signal not a sentence. It's a call to reconnect.
It's a call to take action, to take stock and decide how best to navigate a way through.
Why?
When a leader is disengaged, it shows. Even if you think you're hiding it.
-
Your team feels the shift - Energy, clarity, and motivation flow downhill. When you’re flat, so are they.
-
Decision-making suffers - Disconnection leads to hesitation, reactivity, or autopilot-mode leadership.
-
You lose sight of the bigger picture - You might start solving symptoms instead of root causes. Firefighting replaces vision.
-
You lose yourself in the process - Leadership becomes a role you perform, not a mission you're invested in.
But the truth is: you can absolutely get it back. You just need to be intentional about it.
How?
Here are a few steps that you can take to recover the situation:
1. Revisit your original ‘Why’
Ask yourself:
-
Why did I step into leadership in the first place?
-
What used to energise me about this role?
-
When did I last feel proud of the work I do?
Reconnect with the spark that lit the fire in the first place.
2. Audit your current reality
What is it that is draining you?
-
Is it too many operational tasks?
-
Unclear expectations?
-
A values misalignment?
-
Leadership loneliness?
Naming the issue is the first step to changing it.
3. Talk to your people
Nothing recharges a leader faster than real connection with their team.
Have informal, open conversations. Ask them:
-
'What’s one thing I can do better to support you?'
-
'What are you proud of right now?'
-
'What would make your work more meaningful?'
You’ll be reminded why the work you do, and your role itself, matters.
4. Create space to think, not just do
Reconnection requires mental white space.
Block out time in your week that’s just for strategic reflection.
No meetings. No emails. Just you, your thoughts, and a notepad.
Ask:
-
Where are we going?
-
What’s working?
-
What do I need to let go of?
This isn’t indulgent. It’s absolutely essential.
5. Reset boundaries and rediscover energy outside work
Burnout is often mistaken for disconnection. Sometimes, you just need recovery. What outside of work gives you energy, perspective and joy?
Protect it. Prioritise it. Leaders are human too!
In Summary
I hope that you enjoyed reading this newsletter and that it has given you food for thought.
Leadership is a privilege but it’s also a heavy responsibility. It’s okay to feel off-track. What matters is how you respond.
You don’t need a new job to feel reenergised.
Sometimes, you just need a new lens.
Reconnection isn’t a luxury. It’s your leadership edge!
Have a great week!
