Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF)
Motivation is frequently talked about in terms of the 'team' as a whole.
But this misses the point, because motivations are unique to each individual.
Listen to each person and work out what their motivations are. Then create the conditions to enable your team members to achieve that motivating factor.
The results will be surprising!

What?
The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow can sometimes be easier to find than understanding how best to motivate your team.
And therein lies the problem as stated in the sentence above.
We have referred to motivation from the perspective of the team!
Why?
I have no doubt that team motivation is a critical aspect that needs to be got right in order to garner success. Because it is contagious whether everyone is motivated or not motivated. It spreads!
But what we really should be focusing in on is the motivation behind each component part of the team i.e. the individual.
Your role as the leader is to try and understand what it is that makes every individual in your team tick.
If you can understand that, then you can create the conditions for each person to flourish by feeding their unique motivational needs.
It's hard work, but the results are extraordinary.
How?
How do you do this?
By listening intently. Individuals give away a lot of information about themselves if only you listen to them.
By listening, you can understand what their drivers are.
Perhaps they are career-minded and want to progress. Maybe they are family-orientated at the moment and want to spend some time 'marking time' until their home-life settles down and frees up their capacity.
Maybe you can help someone obtain some funding to attend a development course they have been waiting to go on for years.
Or they are struggling at home, and just need some flexible work hours to make life easier, but are too afraid to ask you.
Or they want free rein to develop an idea in company time, for something that may be of benefit to the company.
Or perhaps they just want autonomy or a sense of purpose!
Whatever it is, you may be the one holding the key to unlock it for them. And if you do, they will pay you back with a renewed sense of energy!
Summary
I hope that you enjoyed reading this week's newsletter.
Understanding your people and what motivates them is a key skill for a leader.
You do this by listening to each person. Then working out how best you can help them.
The key to unlocking motivation for each individual may well be in your hand.
