Being a leader is hard work. It's a skillset which is built on learning 'by doing'. And the more you do it, the better you get at it as your experience and expertise builds.

But, what most people don't realise is that the nature of your leadership style has to change as your career unfolds and the environments in which you operate change.

Leaders tend to move away from the 'General' style of leadership (task-orientated, directed), and move more towards the 'Diplomat' (collaborative, influencing) style the more senior they become.

Additionally, as you become more senior the proportion of time required to be spent leading people, compared to dealing purely with technical/niche issues, increases (see diagram below).
