#71 - True Grit!
23 Jul 25
Success rarely comes down to talent alone. In fact, many of the most accomplished leaders didn’t start with the most advantages. They simply refused to give up. They kept showing up, doing the work, and pushing through resistance long after others had called it quits.
In today's world of short-term wins and quick exits, it's easy to underestimate the power of staying the course. But behind every remarkable achievement lies an unshakeable trio: drive, determination, and tenacity.
Let’s break down what they really mean, why they matter more than ever, and how you can cultivate them for yourself and your team.

#71 - True Grit!
What?
Let's break down the trio to ensure we fully understand the difference:
-
Drive is your internal engine - the hunger to move forward, to achieve, to grow. It’s self-motivation in its rawest form.
-
Determination is your commitment to see things through, even when the initial excitement fades and obstacles arise.
-
Tenacity is your ability to keep going after repeated setbacks. It’s the grit to rise every time you fall.
Together, these qualities form the emotional and mental scaffolding that supports long-term success.
Why?
So why is grit so important?
It's all connected to its strategic value.
-
Resilience is a competitive edge - In complex, high-stakes environments, the ability to persist under pressure separates leaders from managers.
-
It inspires your team - People are drawn to leaders who model unwavering commitment. Tenacity breeds followership.
-
Most breakthroughs are just past the point where others give up - Success often lies on the other side of discomfort. Those who push through are the ones who unlock it.
These types of values can be seen on a regular basis in a multitude of areas, be that in competitive sport, high-tempo business operations and also within our local environments in varying degrees.
How?
The dilemma for leaders is to determine how best to cultivate the values of drive, determination and tenacity in a team.
Here's a good place to start:
-
Revisit your purpose regularly - Drive is fueled by clarity. Reconnect with your ‘why’ to keep your fire burning.
-
Set micro-goals - Break challenges into small wins to maintain determination when progress feels slow.
-
Normalise setbacks - Build a team culture where failure is feedback, not final. Encourage learning over shame.
-
Surround yourself with grit - Tenacity is contagious. Choose to work with people who reflect the mindset you want to embody.
-
Track your consistency, not just results - Progress is sometimes invisible. Celebrate the days you showed up and gave your best, even if the outcome isn’t yet visible.
In Summary
Drive gets you started. Determination keeps you going. Tenacity helps you endure.
You won’t always feel inspired. You won’t always win. But if you keep showing up, with purpose, persistence and patience you will succeed in ways that others only talk about.
Success doesn’t go to the most talented. It goes to the most relentless!
Have a great week!
